Why I Wrote A Prophet's Heart

The genesis of "A Prophet's Heart" was originally the 13th chapter of The Heart of the Prophetic. I wrote The Heart of the Prophetic to shine a bright light on some of the character flaws that cause prophets – and all believers, for that matter – to stray from the narrow path that leads to life and on to the broad path that leads to destruction. The book aimed to help us unlock a greater prophetic anointing so we can lead believers into greater maturity and turns the hearts of the children back to the Father.

The Heart of the Prophetic received rave reviews and commendations from many major, proven, time-tested apostolic and prophetic leaders in the Body of Christ, including Jonas Clark, Ernest Gentile, Dr. Bill Hamon and Graham Cooke. I was humbled to read what they wrote about the content of the book and I am still humbled when I come across those words.

Prophetic Ministry Hijacked?
When it was time to print The Heart of the Prophetic, I made a last minute decision to hold the 13th chapter. I wasn’t sure my readers were ready to hear what the Holy Ghost was saying. Considering some of the unfortunate events in the apostolic and prophetic movement, however, I believe it’s time to deliver this message. The Lord once said this to Jeremiah the prophet:

I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart; Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal (Jeremiah 23:25-27).

Whether you are a prophet or a prophetic person, you need to examine your heart regularly. What’s in our hearts affects the prophetic flow – and that could impact lives, even nations. Let us not speak a vision out of our own heart, but only out of the heart of the Lord.

When I look around at much of prophetic ministry at the time of this writing, I feel like Jeremiah when he recorded these words, “Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the Lord, and because of the words of his holiness. For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right. For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:9-11).

Prophetic Hope
And yet my heart is also hopeful. For I know that just as Elijah was not the only true prophet in a land of corruption, the Lord has a great army of prophets which have not bowed a knee unto Baal (1 Kings 19:18). Some of these prophets have been shunned by the Church. Others have yet to emerge from the wilderness. Still others are in the making process. In fact, some of them I count as friends and mentors.

The psalmist said, “The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes” (Psalm 19:8). And again, “Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from sin?” (Proverbs 20:9). And again, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).
